The world of silkworm larval translucent skin mutants

What is "Aburako"?

It is a Japanese name of silkworm mutants with translucent larval skin caused by uric acid metabolism deficiencies, and usually called as "larval translucent skin mutants" in English. More than 20 loci of such mutations have been identified. Recent advance in silkworm genome analysisbut helps the cloning of the genes.
normal normal silkworm Uric acid crystals accumulated in epidermal cells reflect light and makes the skin opaque. (This is a strain without black spots.)
mutant an Aburako, a larval translucent skin mutant The skin is translucent because the mutant larvae are not able to synthesize or accumulate uric acid. You can see white fat body inside the skin and green mulberry leaves in the midgut through the center line.
